Coinfections are the reason for changes in clinical symptoms of acute respiratory diseases in children
REVIEWS
Abstract
Acute respiratory infections remain a healthcare priority not only due to their high morbidity and mortality worldwide, but also due to the significant economic impact. Acute respiratory infections are caused by a wide range of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Early etiological diagnosis of these diseases allows for targeted treatment, preventing complications and death. Numerous studies have shown that 20 to 33% of all acute respiratory infections worldwide can be caused by several etiological agents in one patient. The combination of acute respiratory pathogens — viral-viral, viral-bacterial, and bacterial-bacterial — has altered the manifestations of the disease, shifting the clinical vector toward both increased symptom severity and an atypical course of the disease, complicating the diagnostic process. Large-scale studies have established a link between the pathogens causing acute viral respiratory infections and specific bacterial pathogens, allowing for more confident initial therapy. Interactions between respiratory viruses influence disease pathogenesis, expand viral tropism, and promote immune evasion, altering the course of the disease and its outcome. Viral-bacterial coinfections can lead to complications when treatment is inappropriately focused on the single infection. Understanding the “Concept of unified airway” by clinicians facilitates the implementation of a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach to successfully achieve disease control.
