Features of psychological and vegetative status in individuals with different levels of emotional intelligence

Abstract

Background.Emotional intelligence is regarded as a critical psychophysiological resource for adaptation under increasing stress, uncertainty, and high demands for self-regulation, while an integrated analysis of its relationship with psychological characteristics and autonomic regulation remains insufficiently developed, thereby substantiating the need for the present study.

Aim.To identify the specific features of psychological status and autonomic regulation in individuals with different levels of emotional intelligence under conditions of relative functional rest.

Materials and methods.A total of 311 volunteers aged 19–24 years (217 women, 94 men) were examined; emotional intelligence was assessed in combination with other psychological parameters (hardiness, intolerance–tolerance to uncertainty, trait anxiety, alexithymia, aggression) and physiological characteristics (functional changes index and Kerdo vegetative index). According to the results of the Hall Emotional Intelligence Test, the participants were stratified into three groups by their level of emotional intelligence: high, moderate, and low.

Results.The analysis of the obtained data revealed significant differences in psychophysiological characteristics: the level of trait anxiety remained within moderate values in individuals with high and medium emotional intelligence, whereas high values were observed in individuals with low emotional intelligence. In all groups, verbal aggression was the predominant form, while the total aggression index was substantially lower in participants with high emotional intelligence compared with the other groups. The highest level of hardiness was observed in individuals with high emotional intelligence, whereas the other groups showed moderate levels. Assessment of the functional changes index demonstrated satisfactory adaptation in all three groups. Analysis of the Kerdo vegetative index showed a predominance of parasympathetic nervous system activity in individuals with high emotional intelligence, while in those with medium and low emotional intelligence the activity of the autonomic nervous system branches was equivalent.

Conclusion.High emotional intelligence is associated with greater hardiness and predominance of parasympathetic nervous system activity, whereas low emotional intelligence is accompanied by autonomic balance, increased trait anxiety, aggression, and alexithymia, reflecting a deficit in emotional awareness.
