Abstract

Liver pathology of any origin and diseases of the hepatobiliary tract with comorbid depressive spectrum disorders pose a difficult task for the doctor to select an antidepressant that does not aggravate the course of somatic pathology. Ademetionin is the active ingredient in such medications as Heptor, Heptral, Samelix, Heptrazan, and Ademetionin. It is widely used in therapeutic, gastroenterological, drug treatment, oncological, and other medical practices as a hepatoprotector with a side effect, which in some cases is desirable, of antidepressant potential. Its ability to effectively correct a pathologically decreased mood background can be explained by normalization of neurotransmission at the level of serotonergic and noradrenergic synapses of the brain and optimization of neurogenesis. It is also worth noting the positive effect of the drug on accelerating the body's detoxification processes from metabolic products, restoring the structural and functional properties of hepatocyte membranes, increasing the antioxidant potential of cells, and inhibiting the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines that can have negative systemic effects on various tissues and organs. The absence of hepatotoxicity in Heptral and the rapid onset of an antidepressant effect can be considered undoubted advantages when prescribing it to patients with liver pathology and depressive disorders. Thus, Heptral may be the drug of choice for the treatment of patients with liver pathology and comorbid depressive disorders occurring within the framework of mild or moderate affective disorders.
