Characteristics of physical development in children with patent ductus arteriosus during the first year of life
ORIGINAL STUDIES
Abstract
Background. The arterial (Botallian) duct, or ductus arteriosus Botalli, is a critical component of fetal circulation that normally closes at the time of circulatory transition from fetal to definitive postnatal type.
The aimof this studywas to investigate specific features of physical development in children with patent ductus arteriosus during their first year of life.
Materials and methods. This research was conducted between 2014 and 2023. Statistical data analysis was performed using Statgraphics Plus 5.0 software. After applying selection criteria, the final sample included 130 patients of both genders, consisting of 66 girls (50.77%) and 64 boys (49.23%).
Results.Individual assessment of physical development levels in patent ductus arteriosus-affected children based on body weight, length, and chest circumference was carried out using centile scales according to the method proposed by R.N. Dorokhov. Among girls and boys in the studied groups, an average growth rate predominated-specifically, 50% for girls and 57.8% for boys. A slower growth rate occurred less frequently-respectively, 38.8% among girls and 29.7% among boys. An accelerated growth rate was observed only in 12.1% of girls and 12.5% of boys, being relatively rare within these groups. There was a clear linear dependence of growth rates on gestational age at birth, with statistically significant findings among girls (r=0.42, p <0.001); however, the presented indicators for intermediate and accelerated growth rates in boys did not reach statistical significance (p >0.05).
Conclusions.Low gestational age combined with slow fetal growth rates are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in preterm newborns, including significantly higher neonatal mortality rates.
